Just visited the20th World Orchid Conference's Orchid Exhibition this afternoon. Whoa!! Really an eye opener. Rare and never seen before, extremely pretty collection of orchids.. Even the students' floral arrangement competition was marvelous. The standard was really very very high. Who says our students could only study.. Go and see for yourself...

Want this to be Your Last Cigarette? 抽你的最后一根烟？

One day I was travelling in a car, and suddenly a bicycle just dashed across the road, totally ignoring the traffic. The cyclist just proudly puffing his cigarette away while "crossing" the road despite warning from all the cars. While he continued on and the cars all had to apply emergency brakes in order avoid knocking him down, he just turned his head and gave everybody the " So What! You Dare?" look..
The driver in my car said " 抽!抽!抽! 抽死你! .. 想抽你的后一根烟？"(Damn it, you want this to be your last cigarette?)
How true ! How True!
First. we all know smoking is bad for health. This guy is already on a suicidal path.
Second, what makes him think that he is above the law, "Jay crossing"
Third, he really think that he is so formidable?
He could easily been killed and become another digit in our Road Traffic Accident Fatality number and yet so Ya Ya! (arrogant).
He is not alone, everyday, we see so many people behaving just like him or worse. Is life really that bad and not worth treasuring?
Friends, friends, treasure our lives and live carefully and well each day ...

CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

Whoa! Big Term. Guess it fits the potentially serious and big problem that we are facing now and seems to be getting worse by the day. Not too long ago in 1994, we had the "Michael Fay" incident that put us on the world map. Today, there is no shortage of Singapore's own version of  "Michael Fay".
Deja vu. Seems like many of the Ministers of Education started their term talking about this  GOAL. Somehow the next minister that took over started with a similar tune again, maybe with a different name. I always think that the chosen Minister of Education should have his or her own child in Primary One, so that his/her own child could enjoy the full benefits of his/her plans.
This is by no means an easy task. Is the Ministry prepared to support the principals, who only then would dare to support the teachers, who, then only dare to discipline our children when they have gone astray?
If the ministry is so afraid of complaints from the parents and can't wait to show their authority to the teachers, our frontline warriors in trying to correct this trend, why should the teachers put their career and "rice bowl" at stake for " someone else's sons or daughters" ? Then, we would have to wait for the next minister ... Hopefully not a graduate from university of NATO ...

ADAPTATION - MY DECORATIVE CRAB

Pictures of Decorative crabs in my tank. It never fail to amaze me its ability to camouflage and adapt to the environment. It will pick pieces of sponge or small coral chips to "decorate" itself to blend itself into the environment. Maybe we can learn a thing or two from it. Adapt into the new world order rather than complaining all the time, and maybe our lives can also be so colorful and beautiful ...

Sorry, this is not to insult anyone or any profession. We are all results of our past experience, be it good or bad, long or short. We are what we are, sometimes, it's by choice, but I am sure more often than not, it was not by our own choice. For those of us in the more fortunate positions, can we not be more gracious and understanding. For those who are able and willing, can we not extend our help? Don't be too fast in passing the verdict and judgement. Often, we hear people who are really fortunate pass such remarks like "they bring it upon themselves...", "they are poor because they are just too lazy..."," he's in poor health because he just wants to make more money...".  Really ???
